Filing After April 15th
So you missed the April 15th deadline. You have probably realized the world isn't coming to an end six days after the fact. There is life post mortem. It's too late to request an extension of time to file, so the important thing is to file your return as soon as possible. Why?
If you owe, you are going to be hit with interest and penalties. So the sooner you file the better. An e-file is probably your best bet. If you are getting a refund back, chances are you are not going to lose it. You may not be hit with late fees either. But it needs to be claimed within three years time or you may as well bid it goodbye.
The IRS will not accept any more electronic submissions after Oct 15th. So make sure you efile as soon as possible.
